How it works

What is Direct Access?

Direct or public access is when a business or member of the public instructs a barrister directly to act on their behalf without the use of a Solicitor. For professional advice and assistance regarding legal disputes, traditionally an individual or company would have to instruct a solicitor. However, recent changes to the provision of legal services now means that almost anyone can now instruct a barrister directly. If you are an individual, a family, a representative or employee of a business, part of a local authority or government body, or a disciplinary or regulatory body, our expert barristers are ready to help you.

Why Choose Direct Access?

Potential advantages of instructing a barrister directly under the public access scheme are:

  • You save money (no hidden charges)
  • You save time
  • Expert legal advice

Our barristers’ have extensive experience in court and appearing in front of judges up and down the country.

The Process

Our barristers offer a free initial telephone consultation up to 30 minutes in length in which you can outline the scope of the legal problem and check whether they are right for you.

Any further work conducted by our barristers will have a fixed price for the work you have asked the barrister to do for you, that is agreed and paid for up-front, so that you know in advance how much our professional assistance will cost.  The cost will depend upon the level of experience of the barrister, the complexity of the case and the length of time that is likely to be involved in dealing with it properly.

Who We Are

Farrar’s Building

Farrar’s Direct is a brand or trading style for public access barristers who practice from Farrar’s Building chambers. Barristers have practised from the site known as Farrar’s Building for centuries. Our barristers and chambers as a whole have featured in the legal directories for many years. Our barristers have traditionally taken on a wide variety of work and we have barristers with expertise and experience in all common law areas of work. We specialise in advocacy (in court, in negotiation or in writing) and can also advise you on your legal problems in writing, on the telephone or in person.

In addition to the training that all barristers undergo to be ‘Called to the Bar’, each of our public access barristers has completed the Bar Standards Board’s approved training to offer their services directly to you without going via a solicitor. Our barristers are instructed by solicitors in other cases and can tell you whether your case is suitable for public access or alternatively whether you should engage a solicitor. If we think you do need a solicitor, normally we will be able to recommend one who would be appropriate for your case.

We are regulated by the Bar Standards Board who have produced guidance that you may find helpful, please  click here to access it.
